As the only registered Eden Alternative facility in Cedar Rapids, we are often asked to define our unique philosophy of care. You can see it reflected in the way we treat our Elders and in everything we do. It motivates us to provide better care and become better care partners. But what exactly is the Eden Alternative Philosophy? Understanding the Eden Alternative Philosophy Simply put, the Eden Philosophy is an alternative approach to senior care. Traditionally, long-term care facilities are stigmatized as places of frailty and waiting. The Eden Alternative Philosophy seeks to turn this idea on its head and create a new kind of care environment. Through this approach, care facilities become human habitats that treat more than just physical ailments—they address the human need for emotional and spiritual fulfilment. Aging is often seen as a period of decline, but we view it as another step in the continuous journey to grow as a person. In caring for our Elders, we learn from them. We draw inspiration from them. And in doing so, we grow ourselves. This allows the care giver becomes the care partner, and our Elders play a greater role in their own wellness, preserving their independence, their dignity, and their sense of self-worth. The Eden Alternative Philosophy at Work At its core, the Eden Alternative Philosophy of care seeks to eliminate the three plagues that tend to affect long-term care centers: loneliness, helplessness and boredom. Loneliness To combat loneliness, we encourage social interaction by offering a variety of group activities that our Elders can choose from. Our community ties run deep—guests from schools, churches, and other organizations drop by frequently to perform, volunteer or just visit with the folks at West [...]
Getting into the Spirit December got off to a fun start this weekend with visiting friends from the Girl Scouts and Coe College. On Saturday, the enthusiastic Troop 5819 was in to play games and do some crafts with the residents. We loved looking around the room and seeing nothing but smiles! A big “thank you” also goes out to the sororities from Coe College who helped us get into the spirit with some old-fashioned caroling. Our residents and staff couldn’t help but sing along as they strolled up and down the halls of West Ridge. The Season for Giving The West Ridge Toys for Tots box is almost full—help us fill it up! Stop by and donate a toy before December 9th. Your generosity is appreciated. A Lot to Look Forward To This weekend the residents will get serious about their shopping as we head to the Coral Ridge Mall on our weekly outing. Then on Saturday, December 10th we’ll show two of our residents’ favorite seasonal movies: A Christmas Story and White Christmas. We'll have the popcorn ready! Check out our activity calendar to see the full schedule of upcoming movies—we’d love to have you there. Finally, mark your calendars! A Christmas Party and Dinner for our residents will be held on December 15th. Bring your appetite for food and fun! Find more details here.
You're invited to the West Ridge Care Center’s Christmas Parties! Details below:
After I blogged last time, we went to the IHCA Convention in Des Moines and haven't blogged since. So I apologize for that since I said I would blog each week. I would like to call a mulligan! That being said here are the details for our Trick-or-Treating event this Saturday: Join us for Trick-or-Treating at West Ridge Care Center on Saturday, October 25th from 2-4pm. There will be games, activities and LOTS of candy! We encourage all staff, family members, Truman Elementary friends, and other friends of West Ridge to bring their children and grandchildren to trick-or-treat in a safe and fun environment. Call West Ridge at 319-390-3367 if you have any questions or for directions. West Ridge Care Center is located at 3131 F Ave. NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405.
West Ridge has not fully utilized our blog as a tool to communicate with our families, care partners and community partners. My plan is to submit at least one post each week to our blog. You can use the blog along with our website and Facebook page to keep up to date with the happenings at West Ridge. For this week, I would like to encourage everyone to take a look at our website and our Facebook page. You can also explore the Facebook pages of Iowa Health Care Association and The Eden Alternative, two excellent organizations that West Ridge is deeply connected to.
